Books that can help build a child’s character

Books help shape a child’s character. This is why parents must choose carefully the books that they read to their kids every night. Stories about love, wisdom, and respect are all great values for kids to absorb at an early age. If you’re looking for books that teach these kinds of principles to kids, maybe consider reading them these titles.

The Giving Tree

This story is about a boy and his friend, and a giving tree. As a child, the main character would go to the tree every day, and eat its apples or play around its trunk. The tree was very happy, and so was the boy. As the kid grew older, however, his needs became more and more complex. The self-sacrificing tree gave and gave, until it could bear anything more. It is a bittersweet story about love and responsibility – qualities that most parents would want from their children.

The Giant Hug

The Giant Hug is a story about Owen, a sweet little pig, who wants to give her grandmother a big hug on her birthday. The problem is, little Owen doesn’t have a lot of money, and her grandmother is living far away. Despite the odds, however, Owen goes on a quest and bravely travels far and wide. Will he make it in time? The Giant Hug is a great read that teaches kids not to rely on money for happiness. It shows children what’s more valuable than material things, which, in this case, is a hug. This value can be commonly seen in charitable groups that operate in countries suffering from civil war. These aid groups understand that food and clothes aren’t the only important things that poor people need – they also need moral support and understanding as well. When kids learn how to be charitable at an early age, they will grow up to be gentle and kind, just like Owen.

Dragon Faye Saves the Day

This is another great book that builds character. Faye is a small and shy little dragon. Because of her size and personality, she is often the victim of bullying. One day, Faye learns a valuable lesson about herself and the dragon that bullies her. She realizes her importance, and learns how to handle bullies twice her age. Dragon Faye Saves the Day teaching kids the important value of respect, and how they can properly handle bullies when faced with one.

Books provide a wonderful outlet for teaching character. Which books do you use with your child?
