Would you like to see your child motivated about learning and not wanting to stop?
One sure way to do this is to combine fun and education for kids! Choose games to learn! Children learn a lot through play. Using games to emphasize their learning can be a wonderful tool to aid their education.
Learning should be a very natural/integral part of a child’s development. Children need to be gaining new information in a positive, fun, and engaging way. It is only when children are engaged, real learning and retention happens. When kids are having FUN while learning they:
- Engage in learning and create interest in new concepts.
- Develop curiosity to learn more.
- Get help in learning difficult concepts.
- Help the reluctant learners.
- Review of concepts already learned is easier.
- Retain information better.
PowerMyLearning provides lots of fun games for kids. The games and resources can be used by students, parents, and teachers. They have educational games for many subjects. As this is a music blog, I am focusing only on my favorite music and art games. The best part-the games are free with plenty to choose from!
Some of the games you can use to introduce kids to the different art and music form. For example hearing and recognizing the different instruments. Others are great to use if your child is already in music or art and you would like to deepen this knowledge with extra activities. Some games are quite empowering to kids as they can publish their art work.
Here are some of the music and art games my kids have used and absolutely loved!
Music Games
Beginning Composition
Getting Your Experienced Musician To A Different Level
Audacity is a free download for recording and editing sounds. Being able to hear yourself play is important for musicians at any level. Why not learn how to make our own recording.
Learning the Instruments for Young Kids
Perfect Pitch is a game helping children learn the instruments of the orchestra and recognize their sounds. They get to practice by getting points based on their answers. Great for elementary- aged children and preschoolers. It can also be use for older students who need introductory knowledge on the instruments. The game is a good resourse for elementary music teachers and their parents.
Art Games
Art History Online
I feel that our kids need much more knowledge about the history of art and music. This knowledge can help them not only appreciate the arts but also make powerful connections across the different subjects. This is missing from the main-stream education at the moment. Standardized testing, teaching for specific knowledge has drifted us away from connecting art with history and social studies. This is a good place to receive information and ideas about teaching and learning about art history.
Learning about Art and Using Technology to Create Your Own
This is a great resource of exploring the elements and principles in art. The game is lots of fun! The children can learn the elements of art and then create their own art. I love that the resource also provides videos with artists in action.
Be Creative and Publish Your Work
Teen Ink is a good place for teens to explore their creativity and to connect with other teens. They can use the platform to create and publish their writings, photos, and art work!
All of these fun games are FREE. The website is easy to navigate. The games and educational resources are divided by grade level. You can sign in as a student, teacher, or a parent. All three options provide the same resources but slightly different way of using them. For example, teachers have a platform at the site where they can collect and create their lesson plans. You would need to sign in through your email and get an account. This games can be great for home learning or to “spice up” a classroom. They are also wonderful to boost up the self esteem of a reluctant learner! You can explore these as well as many more educational games on different subjects.
My kiddos are smaller but this is great info to have in my back pocket! Hi from the monday Hop!
Hi Kelly,
Thank you for your comment. Yes the games are quite neat and they have different subjects (not just music) There are also categorized for different ages and start with preschool age! I am writing about the "older educational games" in this post as these are the students I am working with at the moment.
All the best,
Maria
